Entries for the biggest awards event in the heritage rail sector are now open.

For 2023 the HRA Annual Awards has had a significant overhaul with five new categories and a new venue.

The new categories, together with changes to several existing categories, have been designed to ensure that the awards can continue to recognise the very best work across the whole of the heritage rail sector.

Before selecting a category to enter, please take time to read the terms and conditions for the awards.

Railway of the Year 
New for 2023

This award will be given to the railway, tramway or funicular railway that has achieved and consistently demonstrated excellence in preservation, restoration, operations, teamwork, business and visitor experience. Organisers hope that the award will become one of the most coveted in the entire railway sector, as it will recognise high quality across a whole organisation rather than one specific element.

Team of the Year New for 2023

This accolade will be presented to a specific group or team for excellence in their field. The team could be made up of staff or volunteers who work together regularly, or who have come together to deliver a specific project.

Infrastructure Award New for 2023

For the first time ever, construction and civil engineering projects have their own category at the HRA Awards. The ‘Infrastructure Award’ will go to an outstanding project that can demonstrate how it has supported the long-term viability or development of a railway or tramway.

Rising Star Award New for 2023

The ‘Rising Star’ award is also new for 2023. It aims to recognise innovation, new initiatives and success demonstrated by an HRA member organisation (or a group of its staff or volunteers, or an individual) which is new - i.e.  less than 10 years old - to the heritage rail sector

Award for Business Innovation

The ‘Award for Business Innovation’. This award has been created to recognise creative income generation, new business models, fundraising initiatives, projects or schemes that have delivered real benefits or substantial positive changes to the business activities of a railway or tramway.

The Award for Diesel or Electric Locomotion

Now been broadened for the first time to encompass diesel and electric traction, this award is presented to an HRA member organisation for excellence in the overhaul, restoration, preservation or operation of a powered, self-propelled vehicle including locomotives, multiple units, railcars and trams.

Award for Marketing and Communications

This category will be awarded for excellence in any form of communication, and now covers corporate communications, public relations, advertising and marketing activities, in any format, including digital communications campaigns.

The Morgan Award for Rolling Stock Preservation

Awarded to an HRA member organisation for an outstanding achievement in the restoration of carriages, wagons or other unpowered rolling stock.

The Coiley Award for Steam Locomotive Engineering

Awarded to an HRA member organisation who has completed an outstanding engineering project in the overhaul, restoration, or preservation of a steam locomotive or self-propelled vehicle.

The Award for Environmental Innovation

Awarded to the HRA Operating Member that has produced the most innovative environmental project or initiative.

The Lord Faulkner Young Volunteer Award

Awarded to a volunteer under the age of 26, for significant achievement. (Note: All shortlisted entries will receive a ‘HRA special commendation’).
