Everyone at the Heritage Railway Association was saddened to learn that former Director and Chair of the HRA Legal Committee, Geoffrey Claydon passed away on Monday, 30 June 2025, following a short illness.
Heritage Railway Association Chief Executive, Steve Oates, said: “For decades Geoffrey was one of the most active minds in the heritage rail sector. His considered advice and expertise has shaped our sector in a lasting way.
“Many will know that he was actively involved in the creation of the Transport and Works Act that provides the legal basis for new and extending heritage railways today, and as a key figure in the Tramway Museum Society based at Crich. But fewer will know of his work behind the scenes on a vast array of other areas as an HRA Director and former chair of our Legal Committee. Even in his final days he was working with Lord Faulkner on improvements in legislation to secure the status of young volunteers in heritage rail.
“Geoffrey will be missed enormously by all who knew him and his contributions to heritage rail will not be forgotten.”
