HRA launches new events

A new series of events aimed specifically at the chairs of heritage rail organisations has been launched by the Heritage Railway Association.

Following feedback, the new ‘Chair’s Lunches’ have been designed as ideal opportunities for peer-to-peer conversations with counterparts in other heritage rail bodies and the chance to build new connections.

The HRA already hosts a number of events aimed at a broad spectrum of heritage rail people. But there have been growing calls for an event that facilitates the sharing of opportunities and challenges among those at the head of heritage railway and tramway organisations. The Chair’s Lunches are intended to meet that need in a relaxed and collaborative environment.

With a rapidly evolving visitor economy, cost pressures, and impending changes in legislation such as the ‘Martyn’s Law’ anti-terrorism bill, the HRA feels the need for more support aimed at those making tough decisions is only increasing.

Heritage Railway Association Chief Executive, and former Chair of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Steve Oates, said: “I know from personal experience that sometimes it can feel lonely at the top. Being ultimately responsible for a whole host of decisions at a time when the world heritage railways operate in is changing rapidly can be a stressful position to be in.

“We’ve created the Chair’s Lunches to help heritage rail chairs come together in a relaxed environment to share their thoughts and perhaps talk over their trials and tribulations. We do lots of events where everyone is welcome, but these afternoons are specifically for those who chair a heritage railway, tramway or rolling stock group to collaborate and share their experiences in a supporting environment.

“Ultimately, we hope that by talking, sharing and supporting each other, we’ll build a stronger and more resilient network of chairs that can benefit the whole sector.”

The events are planned to take place at venues across England, Scotland and Wales during the year, with the first taking place in Exeter on Wednesday, 30 April 2025. Other venues will be announced shortly.

Although not a profit-making event, a moderate charge is in place to cover the costs of venue hire and catering. Bookings are open now.
